Volunteerism and Community Service is one of the main components of Beta Club, and by far the one most stressed here at Barret. To maintain your membership in the Beta Club, you must have at least 15 service hours by March 27th, and you must have 45 by January in order to go on the field trip. If you need service hours, check below to see what you can do in the community also listen to announcements to see what is being offered through Barret Cares!
Examples of Community Service Activities
- Serving and/or delivering meals the to needy, elderly, or shut-ins
- Collecting and delivering Christmas gifts to the needy
- Participating in organized community and school cleanup/beautification projects
- Doing volunteer work or activities in nursing homes, hospitals, homeless shelters, animal shelters, etc.
- Helping with community events (races, fairs, walk-a-thons. etc.) that raise money for specific charities or nonprofit community agencies (local library, food bank (Dare to Care), Special Olympics, Diabetes Association, Cancer Society, Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Animal Shelter, Hospital, etc.)
- Working at church-sponsored community outreach events.
- Helping teachers before or after school with paperwork, tutoring, etc.
Non-Examples of Community Service Activities
- Babysitting or doing work around your family, a family friend’s, or a relative’s house. (These are things that you should be doing anyway.)
- Working at a commercial/for-profit business.
- Attending or participating in various sports/games, required recitals, concerts, etc. unless you are helping a coach or counselor.
- Working on projects during the regular school day.
NOTE: When in doubt about if your hours should count or not, contact the director or one of the Beta Club officers. Don't feel like these examples are the only things you can do. Remember, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities!
